Bach's motets formed the cornerstone of his compositional reputation in the century after his death, when he was primarily remembered as a virtuoso keyboardist and the father of famous composers in their own right.
In this session, we'll explore Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied ("Sing unto the Lord a new song," BWV 225), likely first performed exactly 300 years ago; Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf ("The Spirit gives aid to our weakness," BWV 226), first sung in 1729 for the funeral of the rector of the St. Thomas School, Johann Heinrich Ernesti; and Nun danket alle Gott ("Now thank we all our God," BWV Anh. 164), which once was thought to be composed by Bach but was actually composed in 1748 by his pupil and son-in-law, Johann Christoph Altnickol.
We ask for a donation at each session of $20 per person to cover a stipend for the music director and other expenses. But any amount is welcome, and no one is turned away.
