About the Monterey Piano Trio:
The Monterey Piano Trio, founded in 2021 by pianist Connie Kim-Sheng Fried and cellist Ben Fried with violinist Strauss Shi, has quickly established itself as an active presence in the Southern California chamber music community. Violinist Emily Shehi, a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, joined the ensemble in 2026. Within months of its formation, the trio was selected as an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Heifetz International Music Institute and the Amici International Music Festival; and has since been named a semifinalist at the Coltman Chamber Competition and Gianni Bergamo Chamber Music Competition. The ensemble has performed throughout Southern California and appears during Boston Court Pasadena's 2026 concert season.
Individually, the members bring extensive international performing and chamber music experience to the ensemble, with appearances at leading institutions and festivals including the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Kneisel Hall, Aspen Music Festival, Taos School of Music, Music from Angel Fire, and Heifetz International Music Institute. Their collective training spans many of the country's leading conservatories, including the Curtis Institute of Music, Yale School of Music, USC Thornton School of Music, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Mannes College of Music, The Glenn Gould School, and Colburn Conservatory. The ensemble has been mentored by Jeffrey Kahane, Martin Beaver, and Andrew Shulman.
Deeply committed to the next generation of musicians, the Monterey Piano Trio serves as Ensemble-in-Residence at Fried Music in Alhambra, California, founded by Connie Kim-Sheng Fried and Ben Fried. Its members are core faculty of the Fried Music Foundation's full-scholarship Pre-College Program, where chamber music and ensemble performance form the center of an intensive musical education.
