About this Event
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Fractures are no longer weak points, but beautiful elements. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws.
During the 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to repair ceramics with the modern Kintsugi methods finishing the joints with gold powder.
You may bring one or two damaged ceramics to repair in class*. Please follow these guidelines when choosing items to bring:
- The items must be ceramic, pottery, or porcelain. No glass or wood.
- Items must be glazed.
- Smaller and lighter items are generally easier; the original size should be 10 inches or less.
- Items may have up to four fragments and any chips must be smaller than 1/2 inches.
- The technique used in this class is not food-safe; please bring items you plan not to eat or drink out of once repaired. Information on how to do food-safe modern kinstugi on your own will be available.
- For this beginner workshop, make it easy on yourself: we recommend against bringing damaged family heirlooms, heavy items, or items broken into many pieces.
- Bring a cardboard box or something similar that will allow you to carry your items home without touching the repaired parts.
*Small broken ceramics will be provided if you do not have any to bring from home.
While the traditional Kintsugi requires skills, techniques, and time; this modern method is for all skill levels 18yo & up!
All materials are included in the workshop fee. Tools will be provided but all tools will be returned at the end of the workshop.
This class will be taught by Emi Joyce, formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, currently a kintsugi restorer and a natural dyer. You can learn more about her kintsugi work via Instagram, @portlandkintsugirepair.
Note on Sliding Scale Pricing:
Repair PDX seeks to both pay equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.
Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, free tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. Thus, we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. Thus, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.
Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
