Mental Health & Adolescence: Supporting Youth Through Uncertain Times
About this Event

Over the last 56 years, Huckleberry Youth Programs has partnered with youth and families during the most dynamic time of life: adolescence. Teens are full of hope and optimism for the future, however, growing up in an ever-changing and uncertain world has resulted in negative mental health outcomes for many youth.

The pressures to succeed, social media use, socioeconomic disparities, and constant images of violence and illness during the last four years have impacted our young people in a profound way. The Centers for Disease Control and Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General, have recently issued urgent warnings about the effects of isolation, constant social media use, and the role technology plays in modern connection.

This important panel discussion, moderated by KQED's Blanca Torres, will feature: New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Madeline Levine; Douglas Styles, PsyD., Executive Director/CEO of Huckleberry Youth Programs; and, Huckleberry Marriage and Family Therapist Kourtney Johnsn. They will discuss how to support our young people during these unprecedented times and ensure that our youth remain resilient and healthy.

Pre-panel reception begins at 6:30 pm with complimentary beverages.

Madeline Levine, Ph.D. is a psychologist with 40 years of experience as a clinician, consultant, educator and author. Her New York Times bestseller, The Price of Privilege, explores the reasons why teenagers from affluent families are experiencing epidemic rates of emotional problems.

Her follow up book, Teach Your Children Well, also a New York Times bestseller, tackles our current narrow definition of success – how it unnecessarily stresses academically talented kids and marginalizes many more whose talents and interests are less amenable to measurement. Her most recent book, Ready or Not, focuses on how to best prepare our children and ourselves for an uncertain and rapidly changing world. Her books have been translated into multiple languages.
