About the Speaker
This month, we’re delighted to welcome Professor Marianne Stecher-Hansen for a talk on Scandinavia in Wartime, exploring how the five Nordic countries remember World War II eight decades after the Liberation.
About Marianne:
Marianne Stecher-Hansen is Professor and Chair of the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington, where she has taught since 1991. Her scholarship focuses on Danish and Scandinavian literature, and she has published numerous books and articles on writers including Hans Christian Andersen, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), and Thorkild Hansen. She is the author and editor of numerous works, including Nordic War Stories: WWII as History, Fiction, Media and Memory (2021), now available in paperback. Marianne holds the Georg and Nina Pedersen Endowed Professorship in Danish Studies, established in 2023 to support the Danish program at the University of Washington.
Drawing on 25 years of teaching and research on Scandinavia, Marianne will explore the distinct cultural memories of World War II in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, and how these histories continue to shape the region eight decades after the Liberation.
