On October 9th at the Red Bicycle Hall, artists Kuan-yun Huang and Chen Lin Ma will perform a concert entitled “Melodies of Taiwan at Mid-Autumn.” In this concert, they present iconic Taiwanese songs from the 1930s such as “Moon Night Sorrow,” with guided listening, interactive activities, and sing-alongs to show how the lyrics and meaning of the song changed from the period of Japanese colonial rule to martial law under the Guomindang in the postwar era and then finally its latest iteration in the era of democracy in the twenty-first century. The concert and accompanying night market is sponsored by Hanover College, the Madison Performing Arts Foundation, and the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office of Chicago.
Biographies:
Kuan-Yun Huang has over 20 years of experience in violin performance and music education and has an M.A. in Violin Performance from Taipei National University of the Arts. Huang is the founder and director of The Voice of Strings Ensemble and the concertmaster of the Orchestra of National Taichung University of Education. He has musical expertise in violin performance, Bunun Mouth Bow (Taiwan), and Đàn Bầu (Vietnam).
Chen-Lin Ma is a professional piano accompanist and instructor in piano, flute, and music theory. She received her M.A. in Piano Performance from Taipei National University of the Arts. She is the director of Ma Music Studios and a principal flutist in the Dadaocheng Night Orchestra. She has professional experience in music education for preschool children and adult learners.
