📏 Morning: Measure & Explore
We’ll start with playful games and drawing to get to know each other, then investigate how and why we measure things.
Campers will:
- Make their own calipers, a tool for measuring an object’s dimensions.
- Go on a measurement scavenger hunt using rulers, measuring tapes, and calipers.
- Take on a paper-chain challenge: How long a chain can you build from just one sheet of construction paper?
- Practice describing observations, comparing results, and working together.
🌉 Afternoon: Balance & Build
All-day campers will continue with engineering challenges designed for older kids:
- Build a balance scale and explore how to compare weights.
- Design and construct a bridge that can support different loads.
- Test their creations, observe what happens, and use what they learn to improve their designs.

👩🔬 Meet Your Instructor: Lara Azar
Lara has been part of the Craft Lab at Because Science since July 2024, bringing over two years of experience helping our community explore science through hands-on activities. She believes science should feel accessible and inviting, and enjoys using questions, games, and creative projects to help learners build confidence and think critically.
Her STEM education background includes working as a science educator at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, where she engaged visitors in activities covering science, technology, engineering, and medicine. Lara also holds a master’s degree in Communication and Media Studies from the London School of Economics and has worked in media literacy education and research, including at IREX. Her approach connects scientific curiosity with the skills to ask thoughtful questions, evaluate information, and explore ideas independently.
🎟️ Cancellation Policy & Terms
- The cancellation deadline is November 8, 2026.
- Registrations cancelled after November 8 are nonrefundable but transfers to other children or families are welcome, just let us know.
- Please get in touch if a situation arises, as we may be able to make alternative arrangements.
- Please note that the age ranges provided are an estimate so that you can select the camp that is appropriate for your child's abilities. We don't recommend the afternoon session for kids under 6 because they struggle to stay focused the entire day and can become upset. We can only accept children that can use the restroom independently. If a child is disruptive, unable to regulate themselves, or experiencing duress, we will call you to request a pickup or to have an adult present to assist. Please let us know how we can make your child comfortable so they can enjoy the camp!
- Questions? The fastest way is texting us at 571-549-8028 or emailing us at [email protected]
By purchasing a ticket, you agree to these terms.
