Matrilineality and Power

This talk presents recent ancient DNA evidence for matrilineal kinship structures in Iron Age Britain before Rome. It will discuss how early thinking by Classicists on the potential for Iron Age matriarchy was subverted by English anthropology in the late 19th century. We will see how the DNA evidence works alongside archaeological and osteological evidence for the social role of women in Iron Age Britain, and how this is linked to the archaeological evidence for matrifocal societies in Early Iron Age Germany and Gaul, before turning to the plethora of Classical textual commentaries on the nature of female authority in Iron Age Europe. The author is keen to discuss the nature of the relationship between matrilineality and power in the ethnographic literature and would be very grateful for the group’s insights on this in discussion.
Rachel Pope is Professor of European Prehistory at the Department of Archaeology, Classics, and Egyptology (University of Liverpool). She is Vice President of The Prehistoric Society and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Her research is developing data-led archaeological method (big data and contextual analysis of mortuary and settlement data) towards an improved understanding of prehistoric social organisation in Europe before Rome, and the mechanisms involved in social change. She has directed major excavation projects at early hillfort sites in western Britain and is committed to both transdisciplinary dialogue and public science communication.
