Reclaim creative permission and reconnect with your creative practice, in a system that constantly demands justification
About this Event

Rod Kippen, Clinical lead for Creativity and Social Action at The Horsfall and 42nd Street has developed workshops that encourage visual arts educators to create without pressure, reconnect with their own creative practice, and share experiences in a supportive environment. Drawing on approaches used at The Horsfall to support young people, participants will be introduced to techniques that nurture wellbeing, self-expression, and creative confidence. We will also make space for conversation and reflection throughout.

The series of three workshops will be delivered TWICE - at The Leo Kelly School on Tuesday afternoons AND The Horsfall on Friday afternoons. We hope for regular attendance at all three, but they can also be attended on a one-off basis.

Session 1: Getting It Out

“We would do well… to think of the creative process as a living thing implanted in the human psyche.”

Carl Jung

Through free writing, collage, layering, and collaborative making, this session focuses on freeing up creative practice and creating in and for the moment. Together we will reflect on questions including What is creativity? What is art? What gets in the way of creative expression?

Session 2: Making Links

“Creativity is more about taking the facts, fictions, and feelings we store away and finding new ways to connect them.”

Twyla Tharp

Using found objects and mixed media, participants will explore the themes, signs, and symbols that emerge in their own creative lives.

Drawing on ideas from posthumanism and Jungian perspectives on creativity, we will reflect on our relationships with objects and materials, considering how they influence our thinking, making, and meaning-making.

Session 3: The Responsive Mind

“A painting is not a picture of an experience; it is the experience.”

Mark Rothko

Participants will respond to their own work, embracing uncertainty and exploring how creative practices evolve over time.

Through layering, experimentation, and reflection, we will consider how our creative work mirrors the accumulation of experiences in our lives. There will also be opportunities to discuss how to sustain a practice alongside the demands of everyday life.

Manchester Artist Teacher Collective (MATC) brings together artist-teachers from secondary schools and colleges across Manchester, alongside gallery educators from Manchester Art Gallery, the Whitworth, and HOME. Together, we collaborate with art educators, local artists, studios, and gallery spaces to enrich creative practice across the city.

Our events are for teachers, artists, and anyone interested in visual art education.
