About this Event

Local historian Ian McCracken uncovers the remarkable story of his great-aunt Mary, a nurse who served in military hospitals in France and Germany during the First World War.

Drawing on official records from the National Archives and wartime hospital diaries, Ian traces Mary's experiences through a series of facts and stories. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and maps, this talk offers a vivid insight into the realities of nursing on the Western Front, and the vital contribution of women during the war.

Inspired by his earlier research into the 64 former pupils commemorated on Govan High School's War Memorial, Ian brings both historical expertise and a passion for uncovering forgotten stories.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to collect a specially curated handout of resources and links for researching relatives and ancestors who served during the First World War.
