About this Event
Maritime security is almost certainly a non-sequitur. Is it even remotely possible to achieve such security at sea? This seminar will not stray into the naval geostrategic domain which often dominates the news items when it comes to problems like the South China Sea and the future of Taiwan but instead looks specifically at those issues such as piracy in a variety of different forms, terrorism, and cybersecurity that have arisen since 9/11.
It also considers future problems such as alternative sea routes, and those features of the Blue Economy that are of vital importance in today’s world such as climate change, illegal fishing and pollution.
Speaker:
Professor Malcom Murfett has been a member of the Department of War Studies here at King's for the past twelve years. A naval historian of the late modern era, he has taught for forty-six years in major universities in Australia, Canada, Italy, Singapore, and the UK. He has published sixteen books on a variety of topics embracing geostrategic, political and naval themes and is currently finishing his seventeenth on the follies of appeasement. Apart from that he's been pretty good at sport being both a double international and an Oxford Blue.
