L’Amour à la FolieOver four decades, Amadou and Mariam became “an African power couple, two of the continent’s most prominent cultural exports.” (Pitchfork) Sadly, this past April, Amadou passed away, leaving behind Mariam and the duo’s upcoming unreleased album, L’Amour à la Folie.
The Grammy-nominated couple met through Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind. Mariam had become blind by the age of five and Amadou when he was 16. The couple married in 1980 and began making music together as a duo. Eight albums later, they amassed a global following, hooked on their Afro-pop sound that blended Malian blues, hip-hop, disco, and rock, all riding atop their signature buoyant beats.
In this moving tribute to Amadou, Mariam’s joyful, powerful voice will be backed by her long-time band members. Performing music from L’Amour à la Folie, this concert will honour Amadou and the duo’s outstanding musical legacy.
