About this Event
Join us in person for an unforgettable journey into the world of maqām and rhythm! Led by members of Al Firdaus Ensemble, this interactive masterclass explores the modes, aesthetics and expressive techniques that shape the ensemble's distinctive sound. The session will also feature an introduction to Arabic rhythms. Bring your own instruments if you have them.
The masterclass is open to anyone interested in learning about the foundations of Middle Eastern music. We especially encourage Cambridge University music students to participate.
Please note that doors will close shortly before the advertised time so we request that you arrive 15 minutes before the start time.
In collaboration with the Centre for Music Performance, University of Cambridge.
About the Al Firdaus Ensemble
Al Firdaus Ensemble is a unique musical ensemble blending Western classical, Arabic, Turkish, Andalusian, Celtic and Flamenco influences into a rich and harmonious sound. Through music and poetry, the ensemble seeks to inspire the heart, celebrate cultural diversity, and build bridges of peace and understanding.
About the Centre for Music Performance, University of Cambridge
The Centre for Music Performance is a department of the University of Cambridge which enables students of all subjects and levels of musical experience – as well as staff and members of the local community – to make cocurricular music of all genres a core part of their lives. The Centre runs an exceptionally broad programme of musical activities, from orchestras to DJing classes and from instrument lessons for beginners to masterclasses with world-leading performers. It also offers practical support for an even wider range of student-run and college-based musical activity.
We believe that music is a fundamental part of a rounded education. Our guiding vision is that nobody should be excluded from participating in music at Cambridge, and that everyone – from complete beginners to those who will go on to distinguished careers in music – should have opportunities at the University to achieve their musical ambitions and potential.
