About this Event

The Imperfecta Gallery is proud to host Mapping the Cloth, a discussion with Sonja Dahl & Michael Hoeye that will dive into textiles from the Collection of Martha Banyas.

This event is part of Imperfecta's Inter/Dependent programming part of Portland Textile Month - PTXM2026.

Beginning in 1980 Martha Banyas bought, sold and collected the traditional textiles of Southeast Asia for more than 30 years. She visited the major markets and weaving and dying centers of every country in the region. She built a collection that includes works from Bali, Java, Sulawesi, Lombok, Borneo, Sumatra, Sarawak, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and the tribal regions of South China.

During this wondrous, intimate event, we will look at examples from her collection and Sonja Dahl & Michael Hoeye will discuss weaving and dying techniques as well as try to decipher some of the rich history of craft and culture that the pieces embody. We'll also look at how these works, these makers and these traditions influenced Martha's own work as an artist, particularly the pieces of her Valley & Shadow series which are currently in the permanent collection of the Metal Museum in Memphis.
Event detail: October 9, 4pm at the Imperfecta Gallery

The gallery is located at 809 NW Flanders st, Portland OR.
