Join Newberry Library Curator Suzanne Karr Schmidt for a deep dive into the most tactile form of printing in any library or museum–printing on fabric! From a newly-acquired Ethiopian manuscript with guard curtains, engraved silk devotional ephemera, to battlefield bandages and an Abolitionist handkerchief on cotton, the Hanna Holborn Gray SCRC offers an succinct introduction to this little-studied genre spanning several centuries.

Suzanne's next Newberry exhibition, Impressive Textiles: Printing on Fabric, runs December 10, 2026 to April 3, 2027, and will include a print and open-access catalogue distributed by the University of Chicago Press. The Kim-Park Program will also provide an opportunity to attend an exhibition tour of the show at the Newberry with Suzanne on February 12th, 2027! This event is open to all with registration and will be held at Regenstein Library.
