A hands-on CPD exploring portrait-making, shared histories and how art can support empathetic, anti-racist and trauma-aware practice.
About this Event

A creative CPD workshop exploring art, activism and the power of making together.

How can making art help us connect with one another, explore histories and create space for different experiences and perspectives?

Join artist and October Gallery Education Manager Esther Adesigbin for a relaxed, hands-on CPD workshop exploring how creative practice can open up conversations, build empathy and encourage new ways of thinking.

Drawing on Esther's Black Curriculum Experience 365 practice and a portrait-making project developed with Year 3 pupils, inspired by ancient Fayum funerary portraits, we'll explore how materials and making can connect people across cultures, histories and experiences.

Recently featured in the National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD) magazine, Esther's approach brings together art, education and activism through shared making, curiosity and conversation.

During the session, we'll experiment with moulding materials, paint, and observational drawing, to create our own contemporary portraits. Along the way, we'll share ideas about how empathetic, anti-racist and trauma-aware approaches can become part of our everyday creative practice, helping us explore histories and their continuing impact in accessible and meaningful ways.

This is a practical, playful and welcoming session, with plenty of space for experimentation, conversation and exchanging ideas.

Whether you're an artist, educator, facilitator or simply interested in creative approaches to learning and connecting with others, we'd love you to join us.

Come along for an evening of art and activism in practice, shared ideas and the simple pleasure of making together.

Hot drinks, snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The workshop is open to all levels of creative experience. No previous knowledge or specialist skills are needed.

This event is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
