Mah Jongg 101: A Workshop for Beginners
Led by Tracie from Birdie Blue Mahj
Learn the basics of American Mah Jongg play in a casual setting. No stressful competition—just great company. This class is interactive , low pressure, and the perfect way to meet new people.
This class will teach you:

- What's Required to Play
- How to Play
- How to Win
- Learn the Tiles
- Student Exercise-Tile Identification
- Vocabulary
- The NMJL Card
- Interpreting the Card
Birdie Blue Mahj will provide all Mah Jongg sets and cards for this workshop.
Enjoy a welcome glass of prosecco when you arrive and complimentary water, iced tea, and snacks. The bar will be open if you would like to purchase additional drinks or bottles of wine.
After the workshop, you'll put your new knowledge to practice with a guided play session of "Messy Mahj". Together we'll turn the intimidating mix of tiles, card patterns, and rituals into something approachable and enjoyable.
What is Guided Play?
Real Games with Training Wheels
Participants play full games of American Mah Jongg (usually 4-player tables) using standard rules. It's not a lecture — it's hands-on play.
Instructor Support
A teacher or host circulates between tables, answering questions in real time. They help with:
- Clarifying rules or card interpretations.
- Advice on tile discards, Charleston decisions, when to call a tile, or hand strategy.
- Fixing mistakes gently and explaining why something works (or doesn't).
- Keeping the pace moving and maintaining a positive vibe.
Pace and Focus
Games are often played a bit slower than regular open play to allow for learning. It's low-pressure and forgiving — perfect for building speed, confidence, and muscle memory.
Atmosphere and Benefits
These events are social, encouraging, and fun — a casual community feel. They help players:
- Gain experience with live tile flow and table dynamics.
- Try different strategies in a safe space.
