Machine Musicianship #3 brings compositions for the piano automaton by Aya Masui, Slavo Krekovič, Florian Bogner, and Petra Ackermann.Since 2018, ICST has owned a piano automaton developed by Winfried Ritsch. Unlike commercial systems such as the Disklavier, it uses 88 solenoids to strike all keys simultaneously with differentiated velocity and speed — and can be mounted on any standard piano. This opens up new sonic and performative possibilities, especially for algorithmically generated and machine-controlled music.
In 2024, a pedal automaton was developed with ZHAW's Institute of Product Development and Production Technologies (IPP), enabling precise machine control of the piano pedal and further expanding the instrument's expressive range.
The Machine Musicianship concert series explores this expanded instrumentarium, investigating the artistic, technical, and aesthetic potential of machine-based music-making through the presented works.
