About this Event
Join us for a book launch and panel discussion about one of the largest interdisciplinary projects undertaken in the humanities – Living with Machines. Chaired by Andrew Prescott, the launch event will consist of a discussion with the project PI, Ruth Ahnert; team member, Daniel Wilson; and publisher, Emma Gallon from University of London Press.
The world’s first industrial revolution in Britain resulted in an explosion in the creation and collection of documentary sources. The Living with Machines project sought to combine the power of massive digitised historical collections – from maps and census returns to newspapers – with computational analytical tools to examine the ways in which technology altered the very fabric of human existence on a hitherto unprecedented scale. The book Living with Machines presents the results of the project to a wider audience, demonstrating the potential and methods of working at scale with digital collections.
Join members of the project team and the publisher to learn more about the extraordinary impact of technology on humanity in the age of industry and about novel ways of using modern technology for working with the documentary legacy of the period.
