The Function of Resistance
L3S | Live Strategic Solutions Session | Personal Growth
Being human means repeatedly encountering moments when some part of you wants one thing while another part seems to have very different plans.
You want to make the change. Have the conversation. Set the boundary. Start the thing. End the thing. Make the decision. Try something unfamiliar. Stop repeating the same pattern.
And somewhere in that process, resistance tends to show up:
- You know what you want to do, but don't do it.
- You keep thinking about a decision without making it.
- You avoid a conversation you know needs to happen.
- You want something to change, but keep returning to the familiar.
- You procrastinate on something that genuinely matters to you.
- You understand a pattern intellectually, but understanding it hasn't changed it.
- Or you find yourself pushing harder against something that somehow keeps pushing back.
The usual advice is to overcome the resistance. Be more disciplined. Get out of your comfort zone. Stop overthinking. Just do the thing.
But resistance isn't always an obstacle.
Sometimes it is performing a function.
It may be protecting safety, capacity, identity, belonging, certainty, control, or something else you have not yet recognized. It may be responding to conflicting needs, missing information, competing priorities, or consequences you haven't fully accounted for.
So instead of starting with:
“How do I make myself do this?”
we'll start somewhere else:
“What is this resistance doing?”
Because once we understand the function, we can build a better strategy.
BYOP | Bring Your Own Problem
L3S stands for Live Strategic Solutions Session.
This is a 90-minute working session limited to four participants.
There is no predetermined case study and no generic answer that everyone will be asked to apply.
You bring a real situation from your life. We investigate it together. Then we work toward a practical strategy or solution built around the actual conditions creating the resistance.
Your problem is specific. Your solution should be too.
You might bring resistance around:
- making a decision you've been circling
- setting or maintaining a boundary
- starting or ending something
- having a difficult conversation
- changing a habit or recurring pattern
- asking for what you want
- allowing yourself to be seen, heard, or more visible
- following through on something that matters to you
- letting go of something you already know is no longer working
- making a change that feels right but still feels difficult
- something you genuinely want to do but inexplicably keep avoiding
You do not need to arrive knowing why you're resisting.
That's part of the work.
What you'll leave with
The goal is not simply to understand your resistance.
The goal is to do something useful with what we discover.
Depending on your problem, that might mean a new strategy, decision, experiment, reframing, boundary, question, environmental change, or next move.
Four people may walk into the room with resistance.
They should not leave with the same solution.
This is not a sales funnel.
There is no pitch at the end. No upsell. No program you're expected to join next.
You paid for the session. The session is the offer.
A note about what we build together
Live problem-solving sometimes produces ideas that are useful beyond the original problem.
Questions, frameworks, distinctions, decision tools, or other methods that prove broadly applicable may later be further developed as part of HCAD (Human Cognition Architecture & Design) and used to help others.
Your confidential information, identifying details, and specific situation will not become part of those materials.
A note about scope
L3S is a strategic problem-solving session, not therapy or mental health treatment.
Personal problems can be complex, emotional, and deeply human. We can work with the decisions, patterns, constraints, assumptions, and conditions surrounding a problem, but this session is not intended to diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
Bring only what you are comfortable discussing in a small group.
Bring the thing you're stuck on.
We'll find out what the resistance is doing.
Then we'll build from there.
Questions or looking for a private session?
If you'd like to book a private L3S session for yourself or a small group, or if you're not sure whether your problem is a fit, email me at [email protected].
For private bookings, sessions can be tailored around a shared challenge, decision, transition, or area of resistance.
