The Function of Resistance

L3S | Live Strategic Solutions Session | Professional Development

Building a business means repeatedly doing things you have never done before. Launching. Selling. Pricing. Choosing. Delegating. Becoming visible. Investing before you know the outcome. Letting go of ideas you love. Committing to one direction while other possibilities remain open.

And somewhere in that process, resistance tends to show up:

  • You know what you need to do, but don't do it.
  • You keep refining instead of launching.
  • You avoid the sales conversation.
  • You hesitate to raise the price.
  • You keep an offer, client, process, or project alive long after you know something needs to change.
  • Or you find yourself pushing harder against a problem that somehow keeps returning.

The usual advice is to overcome the resistance. Be more disciplined. Get out of your comfort zone. Stop procrastinating. Just do the thing.

But resistance isn't always an obstacle.

Sometimes it is performing a function.

It may be protecting capacity, reducing perceived risk, preserving optionality, responding to missing information, protecting identity, managing competing priorities, or solving a problem you haven't identified yet.

So instead of starting with:

“How do I make myself do this?”

we'll start somewhere else:

“What is this resistance doing?”

Because once we understand the function, we can build a better strategy.

BYOP | Bring Your Own Problem

L3S stands for Live Strategic Solutions Session.

This is a 90-minute working session limited to four participants.

There is no predetermined case study and no generic answer that everyone will be asked to apply.

You bring a real problem from your business. We investigate it together. Then we work toward a practical strategy or solution built around the actual conditions creating the resistance.

Your problem is specific. Your solution should be too.

You might bring resistance around:

  • launching or finishing something
  • sales, visibility, or asking for the business
  • pricing or increasing your rates
  • choosing between competing opportunities
  • narrowing your offer or positioning
  • delegating or hiring
  • making a consequential investment
  • letting go of something that is no longer working
  • following through on a decision you've already made
  • a recurring business problem you've “solved” more than once
  • something you know you need to do but inexplicably keep avoiding

You do not need to arrive knowing why you're resisting.

That's part of the work.

What you'll leave with

The goal is not simply to understand your resistance.

The goal is to do something useful with what we discover.

Depending on your problem, that might mean a new strategy, decision, experiment, reframing, constraint, process, question, or next move.

Four people may walk into the room with resistance.

They should not leave with the same solution.

This is not a sales funnel.

There is no pitch at the end. No upsell. No program you're expected to join next.

You paid for the session. The session is the offer.

A note about what we build together

Live problem-solving sometimes produces ideas that are useful beyond the original problem.

Questions, frameworks, distinctions, decision tools, or other methods that prove broadly applicable may later be further developed as part of HCAD (Human Cognition Architecture & Decision) and used to help others.

Your confidential information, identifying details, and specific business situation will not become part of those materials.

Bring the thing you're stuck on.

We'll find out what the resistance is doing.

Then we'll build from there.
