In this workshop, we are drawn together by sincerely asking: “Why am I practicing Contact Improvisation? What do I value in my practice?” How we do anything is what it becomes: the means are the ends.
With humility, grace, heart, play… clarity, presence, and simplicity we will study our weight in motion. Contact Improvisation is a practice of state-shifting that brings more aliveness, receptivity, and capacity into our dancing bodies. By placing our attention inside our tissues, we will let our muscles, bones, and fluids directly pose questions:
How can we receive the support of the earth to support ourselves and our dance partner(s)?
How can we organize our bodies in any direction in space / radiating from our center?
How can we rise/fall/rise with grace and lightness of heart?
What do we attend to while dancing? How does our attention shape our dancing?
Application based, not for first-timers to CI. Devotion to studying the form and some time spent doing so is a prerequisite to apply. There is limited space in this curated group.
“To bear and not to own;
To act and not lay claim;
To do the work and let it go:
For just letting it go
Is what makes it stay.”
(Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, trans. Ursula K. Le Guin)
Bio: Katherine Lain is a dancer/teacher/writer/bodyworker living between Austin, TX and Athens, GR. She is interested in improvisation as an ensemble art-making process of listening together to what emerges from the present moment. Katherine draws inspiration from observing nature and animals, caring for small humans, studying developmental movement patterns, swimming in wild places, and a decade of massage therapy practice. She has organized and taught at Austin’s weekly CI jam since 2022 and presented original work at M54 (Athens), Jardin d'Alice (France), and the Austin Dance Festival. Katherine is grateful to all her CI teachers and dance ancestors, who have transmitted not only the physical practice but its essence to her.
