About this Event
After a short reading of his own "Liberation Haiku" written in response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, Faisal Mohyuddin will lead participants through a haiku workshop that focuses less on exploring the traditional Japanese form and more on maximizing the rhetorical impact of the non-traditional 5-7-5 "container" we often use when writing haiku in English. Through writing, participants will respond to national and global events and to the artworks included in the Resisting the Long War exhibition at the Hyde Park Art Center. After composing a selection of original haiku, we will create small pieces of art to showcase our writing and then share our creations with one another.
Faisal Mohyuddin is the author of Elsewhere: An Elegy (Next Page Press, 2024), The Displaced Children of Displaced Children (Eyewear Publishing, 2018), and The Riddle of Longing (Backbone Press, 2017; updated edition forthcoming from Bull City Press). He teaches high school English in Chicago and creative writing at Northwestern University's School of Professional Studies. He is also a visual artist.
