Art Goss: Let’s Go Loco for Rococo
Drama, Decadence and the French Revolution
Friday 20 November
6–8pm
£10 per ticket + Eventbrite fee
Adults only
Pastels, florals, powdered wigs, extravagant interiors, secret lovers and far too much money being spent on very pretty things.
After the violent drama of Baroque art, art history takes a turn towards the playful, romantic and wildly decadent world of Rococo.
In this month’s Art Goss, we’ll be diving into the sex, scandal, luxury and excess that helped shape the style, from flirtatious paintings and lavish interiors to the artists and patrons behind them.
But all that decadence was happening while France was heading towards enormous political and social upheaval.
We’ll explore how the changing political climate, growing inequality and the French Revolution transformed the art world, and what happened when Rococo glamour suddenly found itself very out of fashion.
Expect scandal, gossip, extravagance, questionable rich people and plenty of drama.
About Art Goss
Art Goss is a fun, informal and accessible way to learn about art history.
We talk honestly, there are no silly questions, and we take the dryness out of traditional art history talks. If all of this is completely new to you, that’s absolutely fine — no prior knowledge is needed.
We believe art history is one of the best ways to learn about the world, humanity and just how messy the people behind some of history’s most famous artworks really were.
Art Goss is hosted by artist and curator Liv Askwith, whose work explores hyper-femininity and draws deeply from art history.
