Let's Talk!: Menopause, Perimenopause, and Midlife Matrescence

We live in a society that shames women's bodies at first menses. By the time many of us reach midlife, we've never learned to see our bodies in their fullness with every transition and change.

Let's Talk!: Menopause, Perimenopause & Midlife Matrescence will be an intergenerational conversation where Black women from Metro-Detroit are at the center while also welcoming sisters from other cultures to share in the conversation.

Here's what's true:

• Black girls' bodies are often adultified earlier than their peers, which makes one of our hallmark changes in the body (puberty) feel even more awkward and undesired.
• Many of us grow from Black girlhood to womanhood never having honest conversations about sex, reproductive health etc because of anxieties presented by faith, family, and under-resourced school systems.
• During the reproductive years, whether having children or obtaining reproductive medical surgeries - no one tells us how to relate to our bodies after that. We just learn as we go, and that sometimes comes at a cost.
• With reproductive struggles like fibroids, endometriosis, etc., some of our uteruses are growing in such a way that hurts our bladder and pelvic floor. Where do we go to talk about this?
• As Black women shift into perimenopause and menopause, we definitely have not been practiced at having vulnerabile conversations about our bodies. Perhaps we have to have them with our providers, but what if we could have them in community?
• What about post-menopause? Some debate whether that even exists. Let's talk about it!
• Where do conversations about sex, incontinence, community care, self-esteem, self-worth, etc fit into the conversation?
