About this Event

Title:

Lessons learned about Materials: Things You Might Not Know or At Least I Didn’t – 50 Years of Learning

Introducing the Presenter:

Tim Henthorne, B.A.Sc. (mech - including grad studies in failure analysis) holds Transport Canada Licenses as an AME (aircraft maintenance engineer) covering fixed wing maintenance as well as the maintenance, structural repair and component overhaul of rotary wing aircraft. He is a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.). Over a 50 year career, he has acquired a broad range of engineering experience in aircraft maintenance and modification and repair, precision machine design, automation and alternative energy technology. He was a Principal Engineer at Kodak Graphics, and senior engineer at several local high-tech companies. Through his consulting company, Helios Engineering, provides engineering expertise and leadership in design and product development.

Summary of Topic:

Mechanical engineers receive a solid foundation in materials science to enable the design, analysis, and manufacture of safe and reliable structures and products. However, this foundation is only the beginning of developing a deeper understanding of how material composition, processing, and service conditions can determine "the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat" (with apologies to Jim McKay of ABC Sports). This presentation explores lessons learned from material selection and performance, illustrating how materials decisions can influence design success or failure. Examples from the aviation, high-tech, and forensic engineering sectors will be presented.
