The legend of Revolutionary General John Stark loomed large over the generations that followed him, even decades after his death. In this talk, author Jane D. Cairns introduces her new novel, "Exalted Objects," and the generation of Starks who inspired it, the Gilded Age railroad magnate George Stark of Nashua and his eccentric younger brother Will, whose idealistic “cage-free zoo” and unconventional behavior threatened both the family’s fortunes and George’s political ambitions. The novel traces the family’s legacy and the world they inhabited: a New Hampshire transformed by railroads and industrial development and profoundly shaped by the experience of the Civil War.Copies of Cairns’s book will be available for sale and signing at the event. Admission is free for New Hampshire Historical Society members, $10 for nonmembers. No registration is required.
