About this Event
Have you always wanted to learn crochet? Want to dust up on your skills? Join us!
In this workshop, you'll learn basic crochet and hand sewing techniques from Sonika to create square patches to be used as coasters or as patches on your clothing. You'll hand sew a backing onto your square and will have the option to embroider it afterwards. Let's extend the lifespan of textiles, get connected with each other, minimize waste sent to landfills and oceans, share our eco-emotions and create change together!
All materials and food will be provided. All skill levels welcome!
And we will be having a clothing and yarn swap as part of the event. Please bring a pre-washed, good condition clothing item (only 1!) or yarn skeins that you would like to swap with others and take home something new!

We have enough clothes to dress the next six generations. How can we upcycle materials that already exist and deepen our connection to the materials, process and beings around us?
This workshop series aims to equip an intergenerational audience with the skills to upcycle their garments in an effort to reduce waste in our oceans, build community connections and strengthen civic engagement.
With mending, we are exchanging our time, ideas and feelings with each other and to the item we repair. During the process of sewing, we learn to soften our thoughts and appreciate each motion as being part of the whole. A garment, or community, cannot be made with one thread alone.
These workshops are generously funded by the Ocean Action Grant from Oceanwise.
