This class covers the fundamental tenets of design and language in art. Once you understand these principles and the nature of visual language, you can apply them in a manner, method, and style that is your own.
This isn’t a pure abstract class; you get to decide the level of abstraction you wish to explore. It is more of a learn-how-to-think class, where you receive a process for exploring and considering new ideas. It’s a crash course on finding authenticity in your work. We cover core principles of creative expression and the language of art. My intent is to help each artist find a way that works for them, numerous ways to interpret from life, push their existing process, or go fully abstract.
We start with small studies, and lots of them, focusing on compositional explorations with the fundamental tools of design: line, value, color, edge and shape. Once you learn how these elements work in design, it’s easier to apply them to any subject. I talk a lot about the importance of exploration, looking for the thing you didn’t know you were looking for, the importance of utilizing core concepts, and overcoming the psychological blocks.
Core Lessons:
• 7 universal principles of design (without templates)
• The language of art (and how to find your own)
• The act of exploration
• Building trust in your process
• Inventive medium applications
Larry’s 50-year career in art is as varied as it is prolific: graphic design, illustration, public art, plein air, and fine art. He is versatile in all mediums, having worked extensively in pastel, acrylic, oil, gouache, and mixed media. You should work in the medium you are most comfortable with. This is not a class for complete beginners; participants should have some experience with drawing, color mixing, and paint handling.
