About this Event
Join Nooroongji Books and UBC’s Department of Asian Studies for the final gathering of the Korean Book Festival Book Club Series: an intimate evening with Sang-young Park , author of Love in the Big City (대도시의 사랑법).
Over the preceding weeks, readers will meet separately to discuss the novel in Korean at UBC and in English at Nooroongji Books. On October 16, participants from both groups will come together to meet the author and continue the conversation across languages, editions, and reading communities.
Sang-young Park will join readers for a discussion of Love in the Big City (대도시의 사랑법), followed by audience questions and book signing. Whether you have read the novel in Korean or in Anton Hur’s Booker Prize long-listed English translation, this gathering offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of Korea's most distinctive contemporary literary voices.
Light Korean-style refreshments will be served.
This event is part of the Vancouver Korean Book Festival and is hosted by Nooroongji Books in collaboration with UBC’s Department of Asian Studies and the Korean Consulate of Vancouver.
ABOUT LOVE IN THE BIG CITY
Love in the Big City follows Young through friendship, family, desire, heartbreak, and the nightlife of contemporary Seoul. Candid, funny, and emotionally incisive, the novel examines queer life, millennial loneliness, and the tenuous forms that intimacy can take.
The English translation by Anton Hur was longlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize.
