“Zainichi Koreans and Gender”This lecture explores who is defined as a Zainichi Korean and the historical transformation of their legal status in Japanese society. The definition of “Zainichi Korean” has long been debated, with criteria including nationality, registered domicile, length of residence, legal status, and identity. These categories have been shaped in part by patriarchal structures, particularly through generational frameworks. The lecture emphasizes that Zainichi Koreans have always constituted a diverse population, a diversity that has become increasingly visible in contemporary Japan.
Against this background, the lecture focuses on two gender-related issues: women and education, and the experiences of female students navigating the complex intersections of the division between North and South Korea, ethnicity, family, and friendship. It considers how gender shapes belonging, identity, and everyday life among Zainichi Koreans.
