What happens when cinema begins to dream?BAFTA and Grierson Award-winning filmmaker Gerald Fox takes us on a hypnotic journey through the strange, beautiful and wildly inventive world of dreams in silent cinema.
Inspired by the ideas of legendary Harvard film historian Vlada Petrić, KINAESTHESIA explores how the pioneers of early cinema discovered entirely new ways of representing dreams on screen. Slow motion, double exposures, expressionistic lighting, dynamic montage and surreal imagery transformed the new medium into something capable of recreating the strange sensations of the dreaming mind.
Moving through French Impressionism, German Expressionism, Soviet montage, the avant-garde and silent comedy, the film brings together extraordinary work from filmmakers including F.W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, Sergei Eisenstein, Abel Gance, Jean Renoir, Luis Buñuel, Maya Deren, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
Guiding us through this history is Petrić himself, recreated by actor Goran Kostić as he wanders through a succession of dreamlike landscapes, encounters and fragments of cinema history.
Accompanied by a newly composed score, KINAESTHESIA is more than a documentary about silent film. It’s a celebration of the moment filmmakers discovered that cinema didn’t simply have to reproduce reality — it could visualise the impossible.
A love letter to the experimental power of the big screen and to more than a century of cinematic dreaming
