Kiffin Rockwell and the Birth of the Lafayette Escadrille

In August 1914, Kiffin Rockwell and his brother Paul left their home in Atlanta to fight for France in World War 1. Kiffin joined the newest branch of the French military, the Air Service, and became one of the world’s first fighter pilots.

Kiffin wasn’t the only American who volunteered for France and became a pilot. A small group of American pilots convinced the French to form an all-American escadrille, or fighter squadron, which became known as the Lafayette Escadrille. This presentation will show how Kiffin Rockwell became a charter member of this elite organization.
