Hunger can take many forms—an empty stomach, a thinning wallet, or the quiet ache for dignity in a city that rarely stops to look back. In ‘Kheyechish?’, showrunner Meghna Roy Choudhury traces these everyday hungers through the story of a young theatre-maker trying to survive on ₹18,000 a month, where rent swallows most of her earnings and meals reduce to measured acts of negotiation.
What begins as her mother’s simple question,“Ate?”, opens into a tender, sharply observed tragicomedy inspired by Brecht’s The Shopper. Moving between memory, humour, and lived truth, Meghna weaves theatre, storytelling, oral history, and shared rituals into a single intimate space. As the protagonist cooks before her audience, she reveals how hunger is never just about food—it is about being seen, acknowledged, and allowed to belong.
Developed with the Niloufer Sagar Drama School Mumbai Alumni Production Grant, ‘Kheyechish?’ stands as a quietly powerful exploration of survival in an unforgiving city where the craving for community is often as urgent as the craving for a meal.
