About this Event
Start your week with something new. Try a free Sunday morning intro keiko (class) in the Japanese martial art of Aikido with Chicago Aikikai, and then head over for a 25% off drink at Our Mutual City Coffee.
Aikido (合気道) is a throwing and pinning art rooted in the same traditions as jiujitsu, but promotes a non-aggressive, non-competitive philosophy. While many practice it for exercise or self-defense, its ultimate goals are the self-cultivation of a calm mind and relaxed body. Its lack of matches or contests (and the need to prepare for them) allows an inclusive environment in which students of varying age, skill and physical ability train together and side-by-side in a mutually supportive environment. An ideal option for the busy modern person seeking dynamic physical activity without hype or one-upmanship, or someone interested in martial arts but intimidated by more overtly combative styles.
Please come dressed to move and be prepared to train barefoot and make contact with the floor. Class will include a mixture of movement, applied technique, and slower meditative exercises. Instruction will take into account the abilities of individual attendees.
Please note that Aikido is an art that adheres to certain Japanese traditions. Please be mindful and follow any Japanese etiquette demonstrated by the instructor or experienced students.
