🐸 WHAT IS KAMBÔ?
Kambô is a traditional Amazonian medicine used by Indigenous communities for generations.
It is considered a powerful medicine within Amazonian traditions, associated with physical purification, emotional release and spiritual transformation.
Many people describe Kambô as an intelligent medicine that gives you what you need at that particular moment — although that may be very different from what you actually want! 😉
As Vittorio Erspamer, the renowned pharmacologist and chemist, observed, the secretions of certain amphibians contain an extraordinary combination of biologically active substances with potential medical applications.
Kambô is the skin secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), native to the Amazon rainforest.
It contains a complex mixture of bioactive peptides and neuropeptides that can produce intense physiological effects on the human body.
Although these compounds have attracted scientific interest, Kambô itself has not been established as a safe or effective treatment for medical conditions.
Within traditional Amazonian practices, Kambô is valued as a powerful purification medicine, often associated with renewal, strength, clarity and transformation.
✨ WHAT ARE THE TRADITIONALLY REPORTED BENEFITS OF KAMBÔ?
People who have experienced Kambô ceremonies sometimes describe:
* A sense of emotional release
* Greater mental clarity
* A feeling of renewal
* A deeper connection with themselves
* Increased motivation and determination
* A sense of spiritual cleansing
* Letting go of old emotional patterns
* Feeling lighter and more grounded
These are personal experiences rather than medically proven therapeutic benefits.
Kambô is also sometimes promoted for conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, arthritis, infections, autoimmune diseases and other serious illnesses. However, there is currently insufficient reliable clinical evidence to support Kambô as a treatment for these conditions, and it should never replace appropriate medical care.
🌿 KAMBÔ AND PANEMA
In certain Amazonian traditions, Kambô is used to help remove what is known as Panema.
Panema is traditionally described as a state of heaviness, misfortune, stagnation or negative energy that can affect a person’s life.
From a spiritual perspective, it may be associated with emotional burdens, unresolved experiences, negative thoughts, ancestral patterns and feelings of being stuck.
Within these traditions, Kambô ceremonies are regarded as a way of releasing Panema and restoring balance, strength and clarity.
For many people, this spiritual understanding is an important part of the ceremonial experience.
🐸 THE ORIGINS OF KAMBÔ
The names Kambô and Sapo refer to traditional practices involving the skin secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor).
This species is native to the northwestern Amazon Basin, including parts of Brazil, Peru and Colombia.
Kambô has a long history of use among Indigenous Amazonian communities, particularly in connection with hunting, purification and traditional healing practices.
Some Indigenous traditions associate Kambô with overcoming Panema, improving resilience and preparing the body and spirit for challenges.
Historically, different communities have also used it in attempts to address illnesses and physical difficulties. These traditional applications should not be confused with scientifically established medical treatments.
🔬 THE SCIENCE BEHIND KAMBÔ
Scientists have identified numerous biologically active peptides in the secretion of Phyllomedusa bicolor.
These include compounds belonging to groups such as:
* Adenoregulin
* Bombesin-related peptides
* Bradykinin-related peptides
* Caerulein
* Deltorphins
* Neurokinin-related peptides
* Phyllomedusin
* Phyllokinin
* Phyllolitorin
* Sauvagine
* Tachykinin-related peptides
Some of these compounds have been studied for their biological activity and possible future pharmaceutical applications.
However, the scientific investigation of isolated peptides does not mean that applying the frog’s secretion is an effective or safe treatment for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression, cancer, HIV or other illnesses.
Kambô can cause serious adverse reactions, including severe vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, cardiovascular complications and, in rare cases, life-threatening outcomes.
🐸 WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A KAMBÔ SESSION?
Traditionally, the Kambô process is described in three stages:
Preparation – Purification – Recovery
During a Kambô application, a small heated stick is used to make tiny superficial burns on the skin, removing the outermost layer.
The secretion is then placed onto these small points, allowing its active compounds to enter the body.
Although the burns are small, the process may cause discomfort, and the resulting physiological effects can be very intense.
Participants may experience:
* A sudden sensation of heat
* Facial flushing
* Increased heart rate
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Sweating
* Dizziness
* Changes in blood pressure
These reactions are caused by the pharmacological effects of the secretion. Vomiting should not be interpreted as proof that toxins are being removed from the body.
Careful screening is essential, as Kambô is not suitable for everyone.

🌿 RAPÉ & SANANGA MEDICINES
🌿 WHAT IS RAPÉ?
Rapé, also known as Hapé, is a finely ground traditional Amazonian snuff that is administered through the nostrils using a special blowing pipe.
It is used by several Indigenous communities, particularly in Brazil and parts of Peru.
Each tribe has its own traditional recipes, many of which are closely guarded and passed down through generations.
Rapé preparations often contain a combination of medicinal plants, tree ashes, roots, herbs and traditional Amazonian tobacco, such as Mapacho.
Within Amazonian spirituality, tobacco is regarded as a sacred plant and is sometimes associated with the spirit of the Grandfather.
Rapé containing tobacco delivers nicotine, which acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and influences several neurotransmitter systems.
Its effects can vary considerably depending on the ingredients, strength and individual sensitivity.
During ceremonies, Rapé is traditionally used to support grounding, concentration, meditation and a sense of connection with the present moment.
Many participants describe feeling calmer, more focused and more centred after the experience.
From a spiritual perspective, Rapé is also associated with releasing stagnant energies, clearing the mind and preparing oneself for deeper ceremonial work.
It is important to remember that tobacco-containing Rapé can cause nicotine-related side effects and carries risks, including dependence.
👁️ WHAT IS SANANGA?
Sananga is a traditional Amazonian eye preparation associated with Indigenous communities, including the Yawanawá.
It has traditionally been used in connection with hunting, spiritual practices, concentration and ceremonial purification.
Within Indigenous traditions, Sananga is believed to help clear distracting energies, sharpen focus and support spiritual awareness.
Sananga is a very strong eye preparation that can produce an intense burning and stinging sensation.
Imagine accidentally getting hot chilli pepper in your eyes. Now imagine something even more intense! 😅
The discomfort may last several minutes, although the experience varies from person to person.
During the application, we encourage you to concentrate on your breathing, remain as relaxed as possible and focus on letting go.
From a spiritual perspective, some traditions associate the eyes with stored emotional experiences and believe that tears can symbolise emotional release.
Some participants report feeling lighter and mentally clearer afterwards.
However, claims that Sananga improves eyesight or treats glaucoma, cataracts, infections or other eye diseases have not been established through reliable clinical research.
Important: Sananga can cause severe irritation and potentially damage the eyes. Its safety and sterility cannot be assumed, and it should not be used as a substitute for professional eye care.
