What does it mean to have juice? The 1992 film asked that question on the streets of Harlem — and the answer still hits. Because “juice” was never really about power. It was about being *seen*. Being *heard*. Knowing your voice has weight in a room full of people who came from the same place you did.
On October 28th, we’re bringing that energy to the mic.
The Wellness Takeover and Starasia are hosting a night that honors the art of communication through poetry — rooted in the culture, the music, and the legacy of one of hip-hop’s most iconic films. This isn’t just a poetry showcase. It’s an experience built for people who understand that words carry weight, that community is medicine, and that some things only happen when everyone shows up.
The night opens with Mix & Mingle, with time to survey the room, connect with the people around you, and remember why spaces like this matter. From there, a curated lineup of 5 to 6 poets takes the stage, each given the floor to do what they do best. There will also be an opportunity for guests to step to the mic and share their own words.
But we’re not stopping there. We’ll host a workshop designed to pull the poet out of everyone in the room because expression isn’t just for the ones who already know they have it.
A DJ will keep the energy moving throughout the night, weaving the hip-hop roots of the film into every transition. And Lips Cafe will be there for food and beverages to keep you grounded while the room does its work.
Dress inspired. Think 90s. Think Harlem. Think the version of yourself that never stopped having something to say. (Dress coed optional)
*Come as you are. Leave knowing your voice has juice.*
