Crossing Time is an exhibition celebrating the work of the late Jamaican artist Joslyn Walker Peart.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1923, Peart later worked in the plantations of South Carolina before travelling to Britain in 1949 aboard the Empire Windrush. He settled in Birmingham, where he worked at the BSA factory for many years.
Following his retirement, Peart moved to Herefordshire, where he developed his preference for painting with acrylics. His work includes both personal and reflective histories, depicting the transatlantic slave trade alongside the tranquil landscapes of the British countryside that surrounded him.
Together, these paintings form a powerful visual journey - from the trauma and resilience of the past to the peace and beauty of his later life in rural Britain. Through his art, Peart explored themes of memory, migration, identity, and belonging.
