About this Event
Few architects have done more to shape modern Chester than John Douglas, and there’s no better place to see his work than the Rows.
Here, his deep understanding of the city’s history met with true Victorian enthusiasm, creating buildings that still define the character of Chester’s streets today.
This walking tour explores the influences that inspired Douglas and the methods behind his designs, while offering an introduction to how the Victorians approached conservation and restoration. It’s a chance to look closely at buildings you may have passed many times and understand the thinking that brought them to life - and the debates about history and heritage that surrounded them.
