About Technicolour
Taiwanese-Canadian singer-songwriter and artist Jia lures you into the vast, lonely atmosphere of her debut album, Technicolour. She evokes the grit and stillness of an otherworldly desert through a blend of personal storytelling and cinematic drama, using songwriting as she would a journal.
Spanning formative years in her 20s marked by uncertainty, growth, and transformation, these songs exist as fragments of different versions of herself. They tell stories of reflection, dissociation, and reintegration, all filtered through a lens of romantic melancholy. Heartbreak, longing, and the quiet desire for escape linger as recurring threads, defining the album’s emotional landscape.
There are echoes of 60s surf and garage rock with reverberating guitars reminiscent of Dick Dale and Link Wray, while a cool, detached femininity stands on the shoulders of giants like Nancy Sinatra and Françoise Hardy. That sensibility is further inspired by modern contemporaries Lana Del Rey, Mazzy Star, Mitski, and Alexandra Savior.
Jia captures fleeting emotions and small, telling moments—such as glances, silences, and half-finished thoughts—allowing them to carry the weight of the story. There is a sparseness to her writing and a refusal to over-explain. She often explores a tension between vulnerability and detachment or intimacy and distance. She might present a moment of emotional closeness only to undercut it with a sense of disconnection or self-awareness.
Jia draws inspiration from filmmakers such as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Wong Kar Wai, and Jean-Luc Godard. Their influence was integral to her writing process; she often played these films in the background of her Toronto apartment during her sessions.
Technicolour is the debut album by dream-pop artist Jia, coming out on Light Organ Records in Summer 2026.
