An elegant adaptation of Aharon Appelfeld’s award-winning 2006 novel Blooms of Darkness, Mariana's Room tells the story of twelve-year-old Hugo, who is taken in by his mother’s friend, Mariana (Mélanie Thierry), a beautiful sex worker at a brothel in WW2 Ukraine frequented mostly by German soldiers. Director Emmanuel Finkiel delivers a complex and detailed coming-of-age drama, exploring the uneasy spaces between life and death, good and evil, and maternal and sexual love.
