About this Event
Brian Scarborough grew up in Kansas, went to school in Shawnee Mission, and came to jazz by going to his older brother's school jazz band concerts. His brother played trombone, too.
He earned a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from the University of Kansas in 2013 and a Master of Music in jazz studies from DePaul University in 2015. His bio lists the honors along the way: a Luminarts Fellowship in Jazz Improvisation and the lead trombone chair in the Disney All-American College Band, both in 2014, and Kansas City's Favorite Jazz Trombonist in the 2022 Jam Ambassadors Music Awards.
He's played more than 60 musical theater productions, including the first North American tour of Hadestown. He plays with the People's Liberation Big Band and Zen Brass, and he's appeared with the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra.
Every tune on his two albums as a leader is his own. Plastic Sax called his debut, Sunflower Song (2020), "one of the most consequential acoustic jazz albums made entirely by Kansas City musicians in recent years." He recorded the second, We Need The Wind (2024), in March 2023 in Kansas City's jazz district, with Roger Wilder on Fender Rhodes. Both times, Plastic Sax compared him to Bob Brookmeyer, the late Kansas City native. This year he founded Bonetruth Music to publish his educational books.
