About this Event
Japanese Rice Bag Workshop
This workshop runs over two saturdays, 24th October and 7th November at my BearPaw Sewing Studio in Edinburgh.
10.30-13.00
Join us for a fun class, learning how to make a "Japanese Rice Bag" (Komebukoro). The Rice Bag is a square four-sided bag that has a wide opening and drawstring finish.
This bag was traditionally used in Japan to carry rice and has now been adopted as a modern favourite due to its practical shape and range of uses. It is a perfect project to use up scraps of material, recycled denim and sashiko blocks. You can use the bag for just about anything including knitting and sewing projects.
We will be making a 6 inch square bag which will be lined and finished with a drawstring. You can make this bag in a variety of fabrics, patchwork blocks or previously worked "boro or sashiko" pieces. The pattern can also be adjusted to other sizes when you are confident with the method of construction.
- In the first class we will work on the outside panel of the bag with any hand stitching and fabric remnants. We will cover interfacing your fabric and trimming to size using a ruler, mat and rotary cutter.
- In the following class, we will assemble the bag body, lining and drawstring tabs to finish off your rice bag.
More information on what fabric you need to bring and any other requirements will be sent with your order confirmation. Some sewing machines are available to borrow for the class if needed.
