About this Event
Be the first to see our newest exhibition and discover how Liverpool shaped the life and work of James Stirling, one of Britain’s most celebrated architects.
Although born in Glasgow, James Stirling was raised in Liverpool and became fascinated by the city’s industrial past, particularly the docks, where his father worked as a ship’s engineer. He later studied at the Liverpool School of Architecture, where he was part of a bold and experimental approach to architecture that became known as the "maniera Liverpudliana". Decades later, his connection to the city came full circle when he designed Tate Liverpool at the Albert Dock. The city remained a source of inspiration, shaping many of the influences that would define his architecture.
This exhibition traces his journey from ambitious student to internationally renowned architect. Featuring material from RIBA Collections, Canadian Centre for Architecture, and photographs from Stirling's personal archive, it shows how his distinctive style combined modern technology, engineering, and colourful references to architectural history in projects, including the Leicester Engineering Building, Neue Staatsgalerie and No. 1 Poultry.
The exhibition continues until Sunday 25 April 2027.
