Angels have been central to many religions, but they are far more than just a matter of belief and speculation. Throughout history, people of different traditions have reported encounters with Angels, and there has been a great revival of interest in them in recent decades. This first part of this talk demonstrates how Western philosophers and theologians wove together Angelic lore from many cultures, how it was synthesised in the great medieval European universities, and how it came down to us today through various channels. The second part looks at the practice derived from this theory, through Angelic visionaries, religious mystics, grimoire magicians and esoteric Initiates. We will focus on Trithemius's influential work The Art of Drawing Spirits into Crystals, examining the magical technology used, and the deeper rationale behind it.
