The world has rules, but no referee. So what happens when powerful countries decide those rules no longer work for them?
China is rising, Russia is challenging the status quo, and even America's closest allies are questioning whether they can still rely on the country that helped build the global system. Is the world order falling apart?
For decades, the “rules-based international order” has promised a world governed by more than just power. But those rules have never been applied equally and the balance of global power is shifting.
From the postwar order and the rise of American dominance to China, Russia, and Mark Carney's warning of a global “rupture,” this lecture asks why the international order is under pressure, whether it can be saved, and what might replace it.
Summer Sheridan is full-time "career student" and part-time research analyst for the Department of Justice. She holds a masters degree in International Relations and is in the second year of her PhD in International Relations with a focus on International Conflict Management and Resolution. Summer's current research is looking at precolonial Indigenous peace arrangements in the hopes of finding better ways of preventing and stopping ethnic conflict. When she is not studying at the library, Summer loves to walk her dog, bake, or do some yoga.
