About this Event
Railway stations are among the most visited public spaces in Britain, yet many of us pass through them without noticing the statues, sculptures, and memorials that inhabit them. These works of art are more than decoration – they tell stories about the people, events, and values that society has chosen to commemorate.
Drawing on research from his book Silent Sentinels, author Kieron Blake explores the fascinating world of railway station sculptures across Britain and asks important questions about memory, representation, and belonging in our shared public spaces.
Why are certain individuals celebrated with statues while others are forgotten? What do these monuments reveal about the communities they serve? And how do the spaces we move through every day shape our understanding of history?
Through examples from stations across Scotland, England, and Wales, this engaging and discussion-led talk invites audiences to look beyond the rush of daily travel and discover the stories hidden in plain sight.
