For more than a century, downtown factories polluted Omaha with millions of pounds of toxic lead dust. In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began cleaning up what became the largest residential lead Superfund site in the nation. Today the federal government considers the project a success story. However, in 2025, Flatwater Free Press and ProPublica partnered to test soil, and found Omaha is not as lead-free as residents have been told, and Omaha families are at risk. This presentation by FFP reporter Chris Bowling will cover a brief history of the site, and the new findings from the current investigation.
