Gary Johnson has created a fresh watercolor workshop designed for artists who enjoy exploring both abstract and representational approaches. Participants will begin by creating an intuitive abstract painting, allowing color, shape, movement, and spontaneity to lead the way. From there, they will discover how to transform portions of the abstract by introducing representational elements, using gouache as a wash to build, soften, and develop the imagery.The workshop is all about experimentation—no stress, no errors, and no fuss. Gary will share practical approaches and useful techniques that encourage artists to loosen up, trust their instincts, and discover new possibilities within a painting. While these methods can be applied beautifully to still lifes, florals, and other familiar subjects, they can also be used with nearly anything an artist might like to “mix up.”
This workshop offers an enjoyable way to combine the freedom of abstraction with the structure of representational painting,
creating unexpected results and plenty of opportunities for creative discovery.
