About this Event
Come explore the art of stranded colorwork/Fair Isle knitting in this hands-on class. You will
learn strategies for handling two colors of yarn at the same time while making a warm beanie
in worsted weight yarn. We’ll also explore basic color interactions as you work on your hat.
The instructor will provide the class pre-work, the full pattern and color charts.
Skills needed:
Ability to cast on and knit in the round.
Please get the class pre-work from Raven’s Nest. Having the pre-work done allows class time
to be dedicated to learning how to read the charts and do the colorwork on the hat.
Prior to Class Preparation:
Materials
Smooth, worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors (approx. 130 yards of main color
and 50 yards of second color for Fair Isle band)
One 16” circular needle and one set of DPNs, or second circular needle, in US size 7
(or size to obtain gauge)
Scissors
Blunt darning needle
Stitch markers (5)
Gauge: 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch
Directions:
Using appropriate size needles (for a gauge of 5 sts per inch in stockinette stitch), cast on 100
stitches. Join, being careful not to twist and place beginning of round marker.
Ribbed brim: *K1, P1,* then repeat between * and * until end of round. Repeat until hat
reaches 1 ½” in height. Then work in stockinette until hat reaches 2”.
Rolled brim: Knit every round until hat reaches about 3” in height. The brim will roll up as you
knit.
